Pure Essential Oils For A Scented Life

By: Anne Harvester

You might have heard of pure essential oils, but not really been sure of what they are or how they are used. Pure and organic essential oils are pressed from plants, and they offer a clear and strong scent of each particular plant. They are very concentrated oils, and so only a few drops are needed to release a strong scent.

Pure essential oils can be used for several different purposes. They are often an ingredient in various cosmetic products, massage oils and lotions. Many crafters also use the oil as they prepare potpourris. Potpourri is made from dried flower and herb petals, leaves and other plant parts, to which essential oil is added to increase the fragrance of this wonderful and natural room-scenting material. Pure essential oils are also used for the purpose of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is an old practice where psychological and physiological benefits are said to derive from smelling the strong fragrances of plants' pure essential oils. Aromatherapy essential oils are released into the air in several different ways. Diffusers are used for this purpose. Diffusers containing aromatherapy essential oils range in size from tiny personal-size necklace vials to units that are large enough to scent an entire room.

One of the best ways to release the scent of aromatherapy essential oils is to apply gentle heat to the oil. The heat source could be a candle or a light bulb, for example. Several different styles of diffusers offer a basin into which a few drops of aromatherapy essential oils is added, and then a candle is lit under the basin to slowly heat the oil. Other diffusers feature a metal or ceramic ring that fits over the top of a light bulb such as would be used in a lamp. Aromatherapy essential oils are added to the basin within the ring, and the light bulb is turned on. The heat from the bulb helps to release the pure essential oil's fragrance. For the necklace-style personal diffusers, oil is placed inside the little vial, and you simply wear it around your neck, letting your body heat bring out the oil's scent.

Organic essential oils are also added to carrier oils to create wonderful massage oils. A carrier oil such as almond or jojoba is typically used for this purpose, to which a few drops of essential oil are added to create the massage oil.

Organic essential oils can also be used in laundry products. A drop or two of organic essential oils can be placed on a piece of fabric that goes into the dryer to scent your clean clothing.

There are many different scents available in essential oils from which you can easily choose your favorites to scent your home and person.
