Know your perfect length

The good thing about a cocktail dress is that it can be a bit shorter and more casual than most evening dresses. If youre new in school, you may want to do your research. If youre going for whats trendy at the moment, research is easier. You might also want to consider your height and your leg shape. If youre a bit on the stocky side, choosing a longer skirt would be better for you. On the other hand, if youre trying to increase your height, evening dresses which only go down to your knees, or those with varying lengths with the longest tip at your mid-calf, would be most flattering.

Familiarize yourself with fabrics

Aside from the color, the thickness and the sheerness of the fabric does a lot to accentuate the right spots of your body. If youre trying to hide a tummy, try not to go for flowing material around your core area. You might end up revealing too much of your love handles. Thicker fabric would help control this area and make you appear thinner.

If youre on the thin side, however, and would like to give the illusion of curves, flowing material like chiffon would really do you wonders. Most women who want to add curves to their figure even go so far as to choose cocktail dresses which are reminiscent of the Greek era.

Size up

No matter what evening or cocktail dress you pick for your prom, dont lie about your body size, especially if youre ordering the dress online. Nothing looks more horrible than a poorly fitted dress. Dont squeeze yourself on a size three if in reality, youre a size five. Smaller dress sizes wont make you look like a celebrity, but the right size with the right cut just might.
