Purchasing A New Heating System? Consider These 6 Items First

By:

Are you in the market for a furnace replacement? If so, you really must consider a few things before purchasing a new heating system. A decision like this is not to hurry, and a few important points should be researched first.

1- First of all, you want to only do business with a licensed and qualified HVAC dealer or contractor. It's always wise to read unsolicited customer reviews and to check with the BBB in major cities.

In smaller communities, it's typically easy to get feedback from people who have done business with the HVAC Company you're considering.

2- Keep in mind that the sales reps you encounter are an extension of the company you're considering doing business with. Do they present themselves professionally, and are they sufficiently knowledgeable? Do they explain everything clearly and without extreme pressure? I routinely consult Tim Swan, of Swan Heating and Air Conditioning in Fort Collins, CO, on matters concerning HVAC. This is what is written on his website:

"Letting people into your home, even to do necessary maintenance and repairs, requires some trust. That's why when we hire, we run a criminal background check and drug screen. Our technicians are certified by N.A.T.E. (North American Technicians Excellence) and the E.P.A. to work with environmentally harmful chemicals."

He continues, "While on your property our technicians will not smoke cigarettes, chew tobacco, drink alcohol, use your restroom, phone or refrigerator. They are mindful of their speech and will have drop cloths on the floor or shoe covers on their feet. Our technicians are in company uniforms at all times and drive new Swan service vehicles."

3- Next, it only makes sense to get at least two, if not three or more, estimates. You may feel that the first company you talk to is offering a great deal, but don't let that stop you from interviewing others.

Make sure that you get a professionally written estimate that details many items. Those would include such things as the quality of equipment, warranties offered, removal of old materials, permits included, etc.

4- The lowest price quoted should not necessarily be what you base your decision on. Many times, those with the lowest price don't offer a quality product or very good service.

Follow-up maintenance and service agreements are also something to consider. The best companies will offer these quality services and therefore aren't usually the cheapest. But you should look at the entire package in making your decision.

5- Look at other important features of the heating system. You want a furnace replacement that's relatively quiet and energy efficient. Before you buy any system, do your own follow up investigation and read the reviews.

6- Also make sure you completely understand the warranty. Does the warranty cover both parts and labor? Find out if there are extra charges for such things as after-hours service? Not only should you be given a copy of the warranty (for your records), but also make sure you clearly understand it.

As you can see, there are many examples of things to look for in a furnace replacement company. Cost is always important, but shouldn't be the most important thing when buying a new heating system.
