Publish Your Own Book May Be Solution For Memoir Writers

By:

Writing your memoirs leads to the question, "How can I get my book published?" The answer is that you may have to publish your own book. Fortunately, print on demand publishing is a quick, easy, and cheap way to self-publish.

Many people are writing their memoirs. It helps them discover where they came from. They can learn about themselves by searching for the influences that led them to the lives they lead now. They can capture memories of people -- people whom they think should be remembered. Many people write memoirs for the family, so that future generations will know where they came from, will know about their ancestors. Some people write memoirs hoping for riches -- it's almost impossible to write a book without fantasizing about the authors who became rich and famous.

But once you have written a memoir, what can you do with it? If you're thinking of getting it published by regular publisher, you will need an agent. To get an agent, you will need a likely income from the book so that there will be a pie for them to take their slice of. Unless you are famous yourself or have known famous people, or have done impressive things, it is difficult to convince an agent to take on your book.

That leaves self-publishing. People are often afraid of self-publishing, and in the past the fear was justified. A print run can cost over $1000 for hundreds of books. Where will you put all those books? And how are you ever going to get rid of them?

Print on demand publishing alleviates those fears. You can get any number of copies including one. And even one copy will be inexpensive. If you want a book for family or friends, print on demand is the way to go. If you really want a book published by a regular publisher, you can first use print on demand to create copies that you sell online or in person. If you sell enough copies, you will be able to interest an agent in taking you on. You can get on radio shows and tell funny or touching stories and sell books that way.

Although it is not about a memoir, I recall this story from Debra Fine. Debra Fine (The Fine Art of Small Talk) tells that she couldn't find an agent, so she published her book herself and sold it back-of-the-room at speeches. One day she got a call from a publisher offering her a $25,000 advance to publish it. Two years before, she said, she would have said yes immediately and thrown a party, but she was getting a lot of income anyway, so she declined. They called back the next day offering $50,000. At that point, she realized there was money on the table. She quickly got an agent who got her a $500,000, two book deal. Memoirs may be harder, but the lesson is clear: if you can get sales, you can get a publisher.

Writing a memoir is important to you, but to be really satisfied you need to get it out to other people. Print on demand publishing allows you to write your memoir secure in the knowledge that it will be published.
