By: Veronica Krully

By applying for psychology scholarships students can ease the financial pains of college. That way, psychology students can focus on the more important matters of the mind.

Future psychology students may be eligible for general academic achievement scholarships. In addition, there are many psychology scholarships designed specifically for students in this field. Psychology scholarships may be offered by a university or college. The awards may be available to incoming students, or later in college, after a student officially enters a psychology program.

Psychology scholarships aren’t the only awards available. Student may also be eligible for specific grants or fellowships. These may be for general school study or certain research projects.

Many people confuse the work of psychologists with psychiatrists. Psychiatry is a branch of medicine. Doctors of psychiatry help patients with their mental health. This may include therapy sessions or prescribing medicine.

Psychologists, on the other hand, study behavior and mental perceptions. They observe the way humans and animals think and deal with situations, studying relationships, emotion, perception, interaction and cognition.

Much of the work by psychologists centers on lab work. Pavlov’s infamous dogs were what made his research possible. In college, psychology students will be asked to form their own ideas and then test them. Students will help other students and even their professors with lab research. Many schools give college students an opportunity to earn money or extra credit by doing lab work. Research in psychology may be conducted in a variety of settings. Students may observe thinking and behavior patterns in animals and humans.

The American Psychology Association offers psychology scholarships to incoming students. The group’s Web site says the APA, based in Washington, D.C., is the world’s largest association of psychologists with 148,000 members. The APA’s site has good information for potential psychology students, or anyone wanting to learn more about the field. They have lots of reading material on accredited college programs, careers, recommended books, a student forum and even help finding jobs. Each year, the group hosts a convention.

APA scholarships are not the only awards available. Psychology majors have many places to turn to for financial aid. There is Psi Chi, psychology students’ national honor society. This group gives college students psychology scholarships and research grants.
