Psoriasis And The Various Symptoms Of Psoriasis To Pay Attention To

By:

Psoriasis is not a contagious disease and usually occurs in those with a family history of the condition. It represents a malfunction in the immune system that causes the skin to regenerate more frequently than normal leading to "scaly" skin, etc. About 2% of the population in the USA suffers from this condition and this article discusses psoriasis and the various symptoms of psoriasis to pay attention to.

There are many different types of psoriasis but the most common type is known as plaque psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis is usually associated with red skin patches that are covered with silvery scales or flakes that are either oval or circular shaped which may burn or itch. About 90% of suffers of psoriasis have plaque psoriasis.

The common areas that are affected by psoriasis include the elbows, scalp and knees. It can also very well affect many other areas of the body. When skin is injured, psoriasis flare-ups are more likely to occur. If you constantly rub, scratch, or otherwise traumatize the skin, it can also lead to psoriasis flare-ups.

While psoriasis cuts across racial lines, it is most prevalent in people that reside in Western Europe or of a Scandinavian background. As mentioned previously, those with a family history of psoriasis have an increased risk of developing this chronic skin condition for which there is no known cure. In order for a child to develop the condition, both parents have to carry the psoriasis genes and the child will develop the condition in about 50% of the cases when this occurs.

Psoriasis may vary in appearance in various people with the condition. There may be extensive areas of the body covered in raised patchy skin in one person while another only has small bumps of raised patchy skin. The condition may also manifest itself as areas of red patches or as areas with flaky skin that you may be able to easily wipe off. When the small areas of dry skin can be scratched or picked at leading to bleeding, this is one of the symptoms of psoriasis.

Psoriasis also commonly affects genitalia and requires gentle care when the genitals are affected. When psoriasis is present in between the buttocks or on genitalia, navel, etc, the patches of skin signifying this condition will be red and flat making it look more like an infection. Do not overlook this when you notice it as this may be psoriasis and not simply an infection.

Other areas that may be affected by psoriasis include the skin found around or under the nail and may appear in the form of white spots that are small on the nail bed. They may also appear as large areas that are brownish yellow. This type of psoriasis may lead to the nails breaking easily or cracking as well as the loss of the nail when it falls off.

Another common area affected by psoriasis is the scalp leading to a very bad case of dandruff that may be treated with specially medicated shampoos and soaps. This dandruff may fall on the shoulders or get stuck in the hair and can be quite embarrassing and not something that most people want to look at.
