Providence Ri Hospitals How To Prepare For A Hospital Stay

By:

If you or an elderly loved one is preparing for a hospital stay in the near future, there are many ways you can make this stay much easier by preparing for it in advance. Of course not all hospital stays are planned. But for many seniors, there are some necessary hospital procedures that are planned weeks and sometimes even months in advance.

For elderly patients, even hospital admissions can be a tiring and stressful experience. However, some of the necessary paperwork can be done in advance over the phone. In particular, this can be helpful when it comes to things like medication lists, where items may be forgotten on the actual day of the procedure. By calling ahead from home, you will often have the bottles in front of you and you can make sure that all the medications are listed correctly.

Having your favorite toiletries as well as some comfortable clothing for bed (a robe and slippers, for example), can make your hospital stay much more pleasant as well - especially if it will be for several days. Almost no one enjoys wearing the hospital gowns that are issued! Try not to forget items like deodorant or shaving cream either. Although you will often find these available for purchase nearby (such as in the hospital gift shop) if you do forget to pack them in advance, they will likely not be your preferred brand.

Along with items to bring, you should also keep in mind what not to bring as well. All valuables should be left at home. This includes items such as wedding rings and watches. Leave these items in the care of someone you trust or in a safe or similar secure environment.

While recovering from the surgery, you will want some activities that you can do while in bed. Bring some books you are interested in reading (and reading glasses, if you need them), crossword puzzles or other similar activities to keep the boredom away. You will also want to bring important phone numbers with you, especially those of relatives and friends you will want to talk to in the days after surgery.

While in the hospital, you do not want to be worry about financial issues, pets or other issues at home. Instead you want to be able to fully focus on recovery. So make the necessary plans for bills to be paid and animals to be cared for before you leave. Finally, although no one wants to really consider the possibility of death during surgery, it does happen and you should be prepared by having a living and written will prepared just in case the worst happens. Ironically, by knowing you are prepared for this in advance, the stress of this burden should be lifted and you will be able to focus completely on healing after your surgery.
