Providence Nissan Leaf Out-buzzing Chevy Volt Online, And Price Is Helping

By:

You can feel the electricity in the air - and its not from the Chevy Volt. The Nissan LEAF has created a buzz in the auto industry that can only be described as shocking. The LEAF is more popular in online searches and this should translate to sales.

The LEAF did have a huge number of 2011 models already reserved and this is certainly good news for Nissan East Providence dealers. Volt hasnt done as well on the internet as LEAF. Volt did have a flurry of interest when pricing was announced, but overall it has not received the attention of the LEAF.

Providence Nissan Cube owners will appreciate the LEAF for its lack of emissions and fuel bill. It even has a unique look, as does the Cube. Pricing for the LEAF has been set at $28,000-$35,000 without the $7,500 government tax credit. (So basically we are helping pay for people to buy the LEAF - might as well get in line if Im going to pay for it anyway.)

The price of the LEAF is actually in its battery. The lithium-ion 24-kwh battery uses a new type of laminate cells which are a bit pricey. It seems that the cost of the battery is somewhere between $10,000 and $24,000, although more likely closer to the former. Because of the extremely high cost of the battery, Nissan is expected to lease the batteries to buyers to keep the costs lower and keep owners from having to worry about battery replacement.

Mark Perry, Nissan director of product planning, said, We havent decided yet. From a leasing standpoint the pros are a lot. Well, the battery issue could certainly give some buyers pause if Nissan doesnt have the procedure confirmed well before the LEAF goes on sale late this year.

Perry does say that the monthly cost of leasing the battery and the cost of charging it will still show a significant savings over fuel prices. So even with a car payment and the battery lease and charging costs, Nissan assures customers that the total cost will be less than it would with a gasoline-powered vehicle and will be very affordable.

Customers of Nissan East Providence dealers who have not reserved their 2011 Nissan LEAF should probably check with the dealer to see if there will be a wait. As of a few months ago, the initial production run of the LEAF had already been spoken for. If the car is a hit theres little doubt that Nissan will crank out more to meet customer demand. Sometimes the unattainable is much more desirable (and much more popular).

But the LEAF can hold its own. Its not just your run-of-the-mill green car. In fact, it retains the reputation of its maker quite well and doesnt skimp. Buyers will be pleased with the amenities available and thrilled with the low operating cost. Providence Nissan Cube buyers will want a peek at the 2011 LEAF.
