Provide Your Found Ferret With A Cozy Place To Sleep

By:

Ferrets love to sleep and most adult ferrets sleep about 18-20 hours per day. They also enjoy hiding in soft dark spaces. That being said, a ferret needs have a cozy area for sleep and hiding. When a human sleeps we have the option to choose our comfort level. If it is warm in a room we use a lightweight blanket, if the room is colder we use a heavy weight blanket, this helps us to adjust our body temperature while we sleep to make us comfortable. The same holds true for ferrets. Therefore, ferrets need to have two different types of bedding in their cage. Their body temperature and the room temperature can affect their comfort level and this will allow them to choose the bedding where they feel better at that moment. This will promote healthy sleeping patterns. If a ferret is uncomfortable while sleeping it will disturb sleep and your ferret will not live a healthy life.

One bedding option is sleep sacks, also referred to as nap sacks, they will provide extra warmth when necessary. A sleep sack is placed in the bottom of the cage. It usually has one end open for the ferret to crawl into, although sometimes the sleep sacks have openings at both ends. Once the ferret is inside the sleep sack it is encompassed by warmth.

The second bedding option is a hammock. A hammock hangs in mid air and provides a pocketed place that allows for security, as well as a partially open space. Ferrets are usually heat sensitive and the open space provided by the hammock, allows for cooling comfort. Fleece hammocks, purchased at a store, usually come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Many hammocks are larger so that they can accommodate multiple ferrets at the same time, because ferrets love to snuggle with each other while sleeping. Many hammocks are flat looking while others are boot shaped. Some feature a zippered front to allow an individual to adjust the size of the opening. Hammocks allow the ferret to have more space to utilize. They can also be used as a an additional safety feature; hammocks can be used as an alternative step, for the ferret to get access to a higher level of the cage and can also prevent long falls.

You must also be sure that the hammock or sleep sack, that you to choose to purchase, is machine washable. This will prevent the spread of disease. Tightly woven fabric is the best choice, it is the most durable and safe. Any hammock or sleep sack, that stars to fray or separate at the seams, needs to be removed from the cage. If a sleep sack or hammock becomes damaged it then becomes a hazard to your ferret. When buying a hammock, be sure that all of the hardware, that need to be installed, is safe for your ferret.

It is a really good idea to purchase a hammock for you ferret, because hammocks allow the ferret to be in a natural sleeping position which puts less pressure on the ferrets body. It also provides a safe and separate place for the ferret to play.
