Pros And Cons Of Steel Buildings

By:

Steel buildings have over the years been found in commercial and industrial construction, including warehouses, manufacturing plants, office buildings, small shops, retail stores and strip malls, and used for farm barns and commodities storage as well. Lately they are also being utilized in residential building construction. Steel building construction for residential homes is one of the newest choices now available to anyone looking to construct or purchase a new home.

As the saying goes, nothing is perfect and this applies to steel buildings. In as much as they have many advantages they also have their shortcomings. The first advantage of steel buildings over traditional buildings or wood buildings is the large-scale benefit to the consumer when we talk of the durability of the material itself. Steel buildings will last for ages without breaking down or weakening, unlike wood buildings, which are not stable, especially when an external force shakes them, such as earthquakes or heavy winds. Another advantage of steel buildings is that unlike wood structures they can be customized to withstand snow and harsh weather conditions, even hurricane force winds and seismic events such as earthquakes.

Steel buildings are also known to be environmentally friendly in that they inflict minimal or no harm to the environment. Using steel building materials saves the trees in our forests; trees are a very important part of our society and depleting them will only mean more harm to the environment.

Steel buildings are fast and easy to construct compared to brick or wood buildings, which take more time. Steel building manufacturing companies provide pre-engineered steel structures in the form of a steel building kit that can be sent directly to the construction site where the intended structure is to be assembled and built.

Steel buildings are cost effective in that once the structure is completed few repairs are required compared to building with brick, stone or wood. Steel buildings are easy to maintain unlike the more traditional buildings, and there is reduced risk of fire.

With the rising cost of steel, steel building materials do not come at a cheap price. However, due to the depletion of old growth forests, the ever-increasing demand for wood and the reduced number of sources the price of wood for construction often exceeds the price for steel. In conclusion steel buildings offer many advantages and benefits hence the reason steel buildings have gained so much popularity in the general construction industry.
