Proper Lyme Disease Treatment - What's Right For You?

By:

Catching Lyme disease in the early stages makes it easier to treat. Clearing everything up is relatively easy if the tick bite is discovered quickly. Some people are asymptomatic and don't realize they have this disease until it is in it's later stages making it harder to treat and overcome. Here are some treatment options to discuss with your doctor if you do contract Lyme disease.

The first treatment that is used is usually common antibiotics like amoxicillin. These work best when started early on in the disease's life cycle. Often a standard ten day course of the antibiotics should help you get rid of the disease. Sometimes a three week cycle is needed if the disease is a little bit further into the first stage. Once this disease reaches the later stages of its life cycle the oral medications are not much help. Your doctor will probably start you out on them and then, depending on your reaction, move you up to something more intense (if it is needed).

Intravenous drugs are the next step if the Lyme disease didn't respond to the antibiotics or if it wasn't caught soon enough. If this treatment method is used, you will most likely be given rocephin. Studies have shown that intravenous drugs have the same efficacy whether or not they are followed up with antibiotic courses. Discuss the different options with your doctor to find out what will work best for you. The stronger dosage of the intravenous treatment may be a better option for you if the disease is in the later stages.

Your doctor can give you all the details on these studies. In these programs, if you qualify, you are give all of your medical care for lyme disease free of charge, in fact sometimes they pay you! The fact is that not every clinical trial medication works very well. Still, the trials may give you better options than you will find through traditional western medicine.

There aren't very many options to choose from for managing Lyme disease. The way to take care of the disease is solely through the medications that can be provided from your physician or in a hospital. This doesn't mean, though, that you have run out of options when it comes to make the symptoms of the ailment easier to endure. It can take a long time to totally be healed from the illness. Make sure you talk to your doctor about ways to keep the symptoms from becoming too much for you to handle.
