A basic element in ponds is pond algae. This is highly important in the whole ecological balance of the pond since it helps in the production and the cycle of oxygen within this localized area where a good amount of living organisms highly utilize oxygen. Too much of them can be a source of competition for oxygen.

To start off, it is necessary to have the basic and proper equipment installed in the pond. A pump is essential, and it should be able to move a minimum of 1/2 of the total volume of the water in the pond in one hour. In addition to water movement, a filtering system is also important. When the pump moves the water, it should be done in such a way that the water goes through a filter. The filter's size should be enough for the pond.

Certain considerations have to be taken note of when building the pond at the start. This includes the necessity to construct the pond in such a way that no rainwater flows across the yard and gets to the pond. This is because the water tends to bring along organic debris that algae can feed upon.

Pond algae growth is also heightened with the presence of a high PH level. This can be found in materials such as limestone, concreted and marble. Thus, it is most preferable to build the pond with materials other than these.

It is also important to take note of the number and kinds of plants in the pond. There are underwater and floating plants that absorb excess nutrients in the water for their own consumption, leaving less for the algae. Keeping 2/3 of the pond's surface covered with water lilies keep the water warmer and minimizes the amount of sunlight that gets to the algae.

Another way to reduce the amount of algae in the water is to add good bacteria and enzyme products into the pond regularly. In addition to working on the algae, this also helps lessen bad odours and work on the well-being of the fishes as well.

There should be cleaning measures done on a regular basis, too. This includes vacuuming off sludge that accumulates in the pond. When it gets beyond 1/4 of an inch, it should be rid of.

We cannot deny the importance of pond algae. They are useful to have around, but just like everything else, they should be kept at a minimum amount. Too much of something is bad enough.
