Proper Cleaning And Maintenance Is Important When Performing Outside Wood Storage

Do you enjoy spending nice weather outdoors? Perhaps you have invested in some nice outside wood furniture? Everyone wants his or her outdoor furniture to last for a long time. By cleaning your furniture on a regular basis, and performing maintenance when needed, you too can ensure that your outside patio set lasts for years to come. Consider these ideas:

Storing your furniture over the winter months. By performing outside wood storage during bad weather, your furniture will stay in good shape. Outside wood storage is especially important in areas that are hit hard by harsh winter weather. Proper garden furniture storage will keep the sleet, snow, ice and rain from causing damage. Even the most weather resistant furniture can tolerate only so much damaging weather before succumbing. The money you spend for garden outside wood storage will prove to be an excellent investment.

Cleaning is very important in outside wood storage. Before moving your furniture into storage, gather your cleaning cloths and sprays. It is important that your furniture be clean before storing. The months of storage will already contribute enough filth; you don't want to add any more by putting it into storage when it is dirty.

Outdoor furniture stores frequently sell special cleaners to go along with their furniture. If your furniture is made from wood, regardless of whether it is cedar, teak, cypress or some other type, be sure to find and purchase an appropriate cleaner. Some stores sell polishers or gentle cleaners, while others are cover-up sprays, designed to hide scratches and make them disappear. Be careful when buying cleaning products for outdoor furniture. You don't want to buy a cheap spray or polish that starts tearing off the finish when you put it on.

If you own a patio umbrella, hose it down with water from a garden hose. You might even want to use a gentle cleanser. Let it air dry over the next day or so. Once it is completely dry and appears to be very clean, go ahead and pull it in and place in storage. A patio umbrella should never be stored outside for long periods of time as they will become damaged or ripped.

If your furniture needs painting, be sure to complete it before putting it in storage. Before painting your furniture, ask the paint store manager if he or she can give you a "testing cup" which is just what is says. This is a small portion of favorite color paint, put into a cup with a lid or in a small paint bucket. Since some paint stores will charge you for this, be sure you know what it will cost before asking for it.

If your storage area will be open at times, there is always a chance that a critter will walk in or insects will infest it. If you do find a problem with pests, call an exterminating company and let the professionals handle it. You don't want to take a chance that pests will damage your nice patio set.
