Project management is a vital tool for success. I think it is a common occurrence that people either underestimate or do not really know what a project manager does, or is capable of. At some time or another, we all project manage, most of us would not even know we had just carried out a project management plan. But it is true to say we do it day in and day out! Let me give you an example.

A parent has a list of tasks to complete, before it is time to pick the kids up from school in the afternoon. Her tasks include, fuel for the car, food shopping for the family, a visit to the gym followed by a lunch with her friends, then off to the bank and finish at the school a short distance from the bank.

The mother has just carried out a thorough project management plan. She planned a complex number of tasks in one complete trip. She arranged the task in an order where she did not waste time, she took in to consideration her transport needs by purchasing fuel, she food shopped using the bank card, whilst being on a definitive budget, she could not spend more than what is in the account or how much she budgeted for. She took care of her own physical fitness and followed the daily project by attending a timed meeting with friends. Her time management was perfectly managed, and she took care of the family finances at the bank just before it was time to attend her final meeting of the day, collecting the kids.

As you can see the mother and wife carried out her project management plan possibly without thinking, it is what she does every day. Whilst at work we all do the same, without thinking.

A project manager works in a methodical way, he or she, has to plan for every variant or obstacle that may be put in their way. The budget may be for bigger amounts than that of the mother doing her family shop, but the consequences are as serious in either scenario. Neither wish or can afford to go over budget, nor can they afford to change the schedule. The project manager in charge of a big building project, cannot afford to go over the time limit for his or her particular build. If the schedule is over run, the consequences are contractors and hire equipment have to be paid for, but may not be budgeted for. It may be people would be unable to move into the houses. The mother would miss the kids coming out of school. Both very serious ramifications if they get it wrong.
Project management is very important in every sphere of life. It doesnt matter whether you are a parent that needs to manage the daily tasks or you are a manager of big corporation, you need to know how to manage projects in the most effective way.
