Product Creation - May The Fonts Be With You!

By:

If I asked you what font the article you are reading now is written in, would you be able to name it right away? Depending on where you are reading this article, it could be Arial, Verdana or perhaps Times New Roman or any other font. I'm sure those names sound familiar to you. So what does that have to do with product creation? Well, fonts help add a feeling and style to your product. In this article we'll talk about why picking the right font can make a difference in your ebook.

Fonts are basically the styling of a set of characters. In general, fonts used on screen are "sans serif", or without feet, such as Arial or Verdana. Feet are those little swooshes you see on the tips of the letters in your morning news paper. An example of a serif font, or a font with feet, is Times New Roman. Arial, Verdana and Times New Roman are your standard, no frills fonts.

Now, imagine an ebook with one of these fonts used throughout. All the same size, double-spaced like most ebooks are. That's pretty boring isn't it? It would look like a term paper or a research report from high school! Changing your font size, color and type can have a great impact on the feeling of your product.

Internet marketer Paula Brett has a product called "Operation Ebook". It's a step-by-step guide to help you brainstorm and write your ebook. Paula used an "emergency surgery" theme in her book. She used a font that looks like it has stitching around the letters in blue for her chapter titles (like stitches from an operation). This helped pulled together the theme, but it also gave her book a very casual tone which was her goal.

Here are a few tips to for you to change up your fonts in your info product. Just keep in mind that whatever you do, it must be consistent from chapter to chapter and from page to page.

1. Change the size of the font for your headings and sub-headings. You don't have to maintain the same font size throughout your entire document. If your body font is a point size of 10, make your headings a point size of 14.

2. Use bold and italics in addition to different colors for headings and sub-headings. I like making subtle changes in color such as changing a black font to gray for headings. Then bold or italicize it to make it stand out even more.

3. Use a totally different font for your headings and sub-headings. Keep the body text a standard font (e.g., Verdana) but use a contrasting font like Garamond Bold to set off your sections.

4. Change the font color within the body text to make your point stand out. Most people will bold, italicize or underline important points in their text. Why not change the color and bold it instead? That would really make it stand out.
