Processing Pine For The Furniture Industry

By:

The process of of manufacturing furniture is straight forward. It is very simple. How do you make pine wardrobes, or farmhouse tables from a tree. It is an age old art, that over the centuries has created skill passed on from generation to generation, not only in furniture design, and manufacture, but also related skills like tool design and manufacture, ways of hardening steel, making shaped cutters and faster molders and routers, down to computer driven routers and general machinery.

Pine furniture as a industry has become finely honed over the years. Scandinavia tends to produce the best quality pine wood for furniture as it has much colder weather it makes the trees grow at a slower rate making stronger wood. In countries with hotter climates trees grow quicker producing wood that is a lot more brittle by comparison.

Scandinavian forests are well managed with a huge slant on ecology and conservation. After a tree is felled a truck takes it to a processing factory where the timber is cut into two or three sections. These factories use the state of the art technology and can process the wood on an immense scale. Once saws have been used the wood is placed in piles and kiln dried. This process, removes a large percentage of moisture, typically leaving the wood, with eight percent moisture content. The process can then continue.

The pine is cut further into strips about 50mm wide, planed smooth and joined together, by using strong glue and pressing to make pine furniture panels. These are all different sizes, but the most popular size being 2400mm long by 55mm wide. Sometimes a specific size may be made for a specific project, for example, a panel 1800mm long by 55mm wide might be made in bulk for wardrobe sides.

The panels are shrink wrapped , stacked in the loading areas, ready for delivery around the world. Europe uses the vast amount of this timber, but it is exported to China. The turning the boards into pine furniture, is a completely different story.
