Many people spend lots of money on health insurance. There's nothing wrong with that, since health insurance particularly critical illness insurance protects people financially from medical expenses that may arise in the event of sickness or accident. It's a sign that one is well-prepared for unpredictable scenarios. However, some people forget about health preventive measures just because they have insurance. It's imperative to remember that having insurance doesn't mean that it's okay for you to get sick. Preventing diseases should still be the top priority. Below, you will find a list of practical steps that you should undertake to build a stronger defense against various kinds of critical illnesses.

Less Stress

Stress contributes to a myriad of health problems including but not limited to hypertension, high cholesterol levels, insomnia, and even cancer. That's because stress releases toxins in the body and weakens the body's immune system. Yes, it's common for people to be stressed in a fast-paced society like ours but we must all take a break once in a while if we don't want to succumb to the illnesses mentioned above. Taking a break from the stressful life can be achieved by getting a soothing massage, engaging in yoga, breathing techniques, or meditative activities, going out with family and friends, watching a movie, spending time at the beach, and so on. Traveling is another excellent way to relieve yourself off stress. Just see to it that you equip yourself with the right travel insurance to avoid further stress in case of trip cancellation or baggage loss.

Healthy Diet

Another major component of living a full and healthy life is eating the right diet. A right diet is one composed of all necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Your diet should also be rich in dietary fiber to aid the body in absorbing the nutrients while sweeping away harmful toxins. Free radicals, which are by-products of the process called oxidation, are also harmful to the body. This can cause premature aging as well as some forms of cancer. These can be neutralized through antioxidants that are found in foods like berries, pineapple, kiwi fruit, grapefruit, kale, chili pepper, red cabbage, apricots, prunes, dates, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, ground nut or peanuts, and sunflower seeds. Stay away from foods that are high in cholesterol, sugar, and sodium. Avoid processed food products particularly meat items, which are very high in trans fats and sodium. Eat more at home and spend less time eating out, especially in fast foods.

Physical Activity

The list won't be exhaustive if you don't include physical activity on the list. It's imperative that you turn over a new leaf and forget about the sedentary lifestyle you've gotten used to. You need to be engage in physical activities at least 30 minutes every day. You don't have to go to the gym or do strenuous exercises. All you have to do is to squeeze exercise into your daily life by taking the stairs instead the elevator, walking around the neighbourhood, playing outside with the kids, or taking the dogs for a walk. Exercise not only boosts your physical health but also your emotional wellbeing by releasing brain chemicals like serotonin that can improve the mood.
