Preventing Auto Theft

By:

Auto theft rates have been on the decline in recent years, but still remains a problem in certain parts of the United States. And while rates are an important evaluation tool when analyzing the current state of this crime, it's really the money lost from thefts that are the issue. Vehicles are very expensive, and losing one to theft can be quite costly. Even if it's recovered, there's a good chance that it will be damaged or items will be stolen from it.

While there is no surefire way to prevent theft, you can really reduce the chances of it happening to you just by doing some of the basics in anti-theft. Here are a few prevention steps to follow.

Always lock your vehicle when it's unattended. While this sounds incredible simple and obvious, the truth is not everyone does it. Even if you are only 20 ft. away from your vehicle, it can still be stolen while you aren't looking.

Don't leave your keys in the vehicle. This goes hand and hand with locking your doors, and also means not leaving a spare key lying around either. Believe it or not, approximately 1 out of every 5 thefts occur because they doors were unlocked. So you can reduce your chances of being a victim by 20% just by locking your doors.

One of the ways to make your vehicle a bigger target is by having items laying around for thieves to notice. They don't have to be expensive pieces of jewelry for a thief to take notice. It could be a pile of CDs laying right there in the open that entices a thief to choose your vehicle over someone elses. The idea then is to make sure that nothing valuable is in view. Hide them under a towel or place them in the trunk.

Never leave your windows all the way down. If it's warm out and you want to leave it open by a crack, then you might be fine depending on the area you're in. Otherwise, they should always be all the way up. This will at least make a thief hesitate about breaking in.

GPS tracking devices have helped lower auto theft rates in recent years. They are designed to help you recover your vehicle if it's stolen. One of the better recovery systems out there is by LoJack. Preventing theft may not work, but tracking it down just might.
