Prevent Mold And Mildew From Taking Over After The Storms Have Gone

By:

With the storms beginning to fire up across the nation, it is that time of the year when they pop up out of no where to strike homes. They bring heavy rain and strong winds that sometimes do only minor damage to a home, so it might appear anyway. The storm may be gone, but for some reason your family seems to be suffering from sneezing, coughing, and others symptoms that can not be explained. This is all to familiar when a storm has hit that just did minor damage. Residents might not see what is really happening to the inside of their home.

This is where there has been damage done to a home that is not really visible, but the damage is there. Whether it is a leak from the roof that was damaged in the storm or another part of the home that was affected. There is a reason for the symptoms that your family is suffering from and it is more than likely from mold and mildew.

Strong winds of this type can loosen shingles or damage flashing over a porch or chimney. Water might be settling too near the home when it rains and cause a damp basement or water to accumulate in the crawlspace under the house. Standing water or leaks that are not detected can produce mold and mildew in the attic, basement, or crawlspace. These are the first places that will that mold can begin growing without anyone knowing that could be caused by a storm.

The attic is not a place that is usually thought of much, but is most definitely part of the home that can harbor mold and mildew. This is the area where mold and mildew can be in a home because it is right below the roof where it can be absorbed by wood and insulation. Just a small leak that goes undetected for a long period of time will produce mold and mildew that have serious health risks. Once the mold spores get airborne, it is only a matter of time before the breathing problems begin to occur.

So, if in the future you have had a storm with strong winds and heavy rain that does not appear to have done much damage to your home, but you begin to experience breathing problems, a phone call to your local water damage company might be a good idea just to have them check out your home and look for water damaged areas that could be causing your cold or allergy-like symptoms.
