Prevent All Those Cavities

Dental health is extremely important. Poor dental hygiene can lead to the development of a very uncomfortable condition, known as a cavity. A cavity is a space inside your tooth that has rotted away from the inside out. It can be very painful and often requires dental surgery. Prevention is the best medicine, as far as cavities are concerned.

The Foods You Eat

Believe it or not, the type of foods that you eat can directly contribute to whether or not you develop cavities. For years, parents have told their children not to eat an abundance of specific foods, or otherwise their teeth would rot. There is actually a lot of research that backs up these parental admonitions. Candy and other sticky foods are terrible for your teeth. The reason they are so bad is that they stick to the crevices in between your teeth, and they stay there. Even after you brush, some sticky food will remain on the surface of your teeth.

Candy is filled with sugar, so it is doubly bad for your teeth. Sugar contributes to the buildup of tartar and plaque on the surface of your teeth. This sticky, tar-like substance can cause your teeth to rot from the inside out. This is a cavity. If a cavity starts in one of your teeth, it cannot be stopped or reversed. The tooth will have to be pulled out. By cutting out foods that are high in sugar or foods that are exceptionally sticky, you can greatly improve the health of your mouth.

Caring For Your Teeth

Another important step in preventing cavities is properly caring for your teeth. Many individuals have no idea how important dental hygiene is or how often it must be performed. Ideally, you should brush your teeth immediately after every meal. Any time food goes in your mouth, it collects around, and in between, your teeth.

Brushing will help to remove these food particles and prevent decay. In reality, most consumers brush their teeth in the morning and at night. This is acceptable, though brushing should always be paired with flossing for optimal health. Flossing is the process of running a thin fiber or string through the spaces in between teeth. Flossing helps to remove trapped particles of food from the gums and from in between the teeth. This will dramatically improve the health of your mouth.

Visit the Dentist

If you truly want to decrease the risk of cavities in your own mouth, you must schedule regular trips to the dentist's office. Since most people are busy with their everyday lives, it is nearly impossible to provide your teeth with the care and attention that they require to prevent cavities from building up. By scheduling a dental visit, however, you can improve the health of your teeth.

A dental hygienist can scrape away plaque and tartar that has built up on difficult places to reach in your mouth. A dental hygienist will also treat your teeth with a fluoride treatment that will help to strengthen and clean your teeth, and will floss and polish your teeth for a perfect shine. Scheduling dental visits on a regular basis will dramatically lower your chances of getting a cavity.
