Preserve Your Vision With Proper Eye Care

How important is your vision to you? Most people would consider good eyesight to be one of the most, or the most important things they have. If they don't have it, they wish they did. What can you do to keep your eyes healthy and preserve your vision?

Whether you have perfect vision or are very near sighted, regular check-ups with the eye doctor are vital to good eye health. Most of these visits can be made to an optometrist. However, if serious problems crop up, they can refer you to an ophthalmologist. In the office the eye doctor has state of the art machines that will show him or her the entire structure of the eye. They will also hold up different lenses to your eyes to find out if your vision can be improved with glasses or contacts.

Have you been wearing corrective lenses for years? Are you tired of your contacts irritating your eyes? Do you hate when the lenses in your glasses become scratched? LASIK is a great option for those who need their vision corrected. Your optometrist can usually tell you if you are a good candidate for the surgery. LASIK is a bladeless laser surgery that restructures the surface of the eye and restores vision. If a person is having both eyes done then the surgeon will typically give them one near sighted and one far sighted eye so that they can read and see things in the distance as well. This surgery is very safe if you choose an experienced surgeon to do it.

It is important if you are going out in the sun that you wear sunglasses. Just like your skin needs sunscreen to protect it from the sun's harmful rays, your eyes need protection as well. Too much sun exposure to your eyes can cause you to develop tumors in and around your eyes. Make sure that the sunglasses you buy are high quality; cheap sunglasses don't keep out the UVA rays and they can distort your vision. The inexpensive plastic lenses usually have flaws in them.
Another way to take care of your eyes is read in good light. The strain caused from reading in dim light can bring on headaches.

If you suffer from allergies and get red, itchy eyes, do not rub them. This will irritate them even more. Use a cool wash cloth to relieve them. If you need eye drops to relieve the dryness, consult your eye doctor and get a prescription if possible.
