Preschoolers' Halloween - Trick-or-treat Or Host A Halloween Party?

By:

Halloween and preschoolers are made for each other. How are you planning to introduce Halloween with your preschooler?

For most people, the choice is between trick-or-treating or having a Halloween party.

There are pros and cons to both. Keep in mind that doing one doesn't preclude doing the other. It all depends on time, logistics and personal preference.

For many kids, trick-or-treating is Halloween. They love dressing up in costume and venturing out to capture a bounty of candy and other treats.

Trick-or-treating is particularly well suited to the older kids. But the preschoolers can enjoy it if done with their limitations in mind.

First, keep in mind that a lot of the aspects of Halloween that older kids take into stride might be scary to the young ones. That is one good reason to go early-while it is still daylight. Another is that young children have early bed-times.

The sun sets early in late October so you'll have to take time from work if you work during traditional office hours.

That can be a challenge in some offices if you have to take time off from work. If the employer needs to ensure proper staffing during regular office hours and there are many parents of young children vying to take off early, the afternoon of October 31st can be a highly coveted slot.

An awareness of safety when devising a Halloween costume. Ill-fitting masks can obscure vision and long costumes can make it easy to trip and fall. This is particularly important when your children will be out on the street trick-or-treating.

You'll want to keep the little ones closely supervised. It is best to stay close to home, visiting neighbors whom you know. And you'll want to inspect the booty before giving your child access to the treats.

And a big issue to keep in mind is that trick-or-treating puts you at the mercy of the day's weather conditions.

But for many parents, a more practical way for a preschooler to celebrate Halloween is a party.

The advantages are many:

-You can schedule the date and time to your convenience. If October 31 does not work for you, just schedule it for a date and time of your preference. Most likely that will be a weekend afternoon near the holiday. Keep in mind the availability of other helpers when scheduling your date to make it easier on you.

-Most likely the party will be indoors-in your home or other location. That eliminates worry about rain, excessive cold or other poor weather conditions.

-A Halloween party limited to guests of preschool age can be tailored to their likes and limitations. The activities and games can be kept to a level that this age group would find enjoyable, but would probably bore older kids.

-Lastly, Halloween parties are designed for the little guests to socialize. Not only can they enjoy the activities and have fun, they get to practice socializing with their peers. And their parents can get to know each other better, too.
