Preschool Lesson Plans- How Can Teachers Be Creative?

By:

Preschool lesson plans are best when they have a theme. A teacher's creativity comes to the fore when she introduces themes into her lesson plans. These plans may not be successful for a lesson but they do contribute a lot in bringing everything together and keeping the students engaged in understanding their most important concepts in learning.

Through themes teachers can be creative. They can show how things that are different can be interrelated. It also gives them the opportunity to dig deeper into concepts. A different angle to these concepts emerges when a thorough probe is conducted.

How should the teacher use these themes?
The main hurdle lies in choosing a theme. Once a theme is chosen the next big hurdle lies in fitting the theme into the lesson. This isnt easy as several components are to be fitted into the themed lesson. A lesson just cannot be made with a theme. The lesson should have an objective or rather the themed lesson plan should have an objective that describes what could be the objectives in teaching such a lesson. The objective determines if the lesson is to be geography, or wildlife or new vocabulary etc.

In the same creative manner the teacher can then introduce a physical activity to get students up and about, and involved in the lesson. Games in the form of songs, dance, dumb charades, follow the leader or scavenger hunt make the learning more interesting and fun. But the main objective of these games should not be forgotten and that is to tie back to the theme and allow students to explore the concept further.

The following sample themes give a good idea as to the kind of themes that can be chosen from.

1.World geography
2.Pets
3.Weather
4.Flowers
5.Animals in the zoo
6.Household items
7.Holidays
8.Seasons
9.Family vacations
10.Colors

Themes can help teachers in tying up lessons together; explore ideas in a way that is different, has depth, can touch on different aspects but focussed enough to see the connectedness of ideas into the subject or topic that is being taught.
