Preexisting Condition Health Insurance - Good For What Ails You

By:

I have a preexisting health condition. I was in a freak canoe accident when I was working as a tour guide in Hawaii. As ridiculous as that sounds, it's left me with two enlarged disks in my back and with chronic pain and reoccurring partial paralyzation of my right leg. There have been times when I've spent weeks, writhing around on the floor, barely able to stand or walk. Needless to say, performing even basic functions becomes almost impossible, and in that condition, I don't have the reflexes or control to be able to drive to work safely.

Over the years, I have learned to cope. The right exercises and hydration make a big difference, but it is still something that I live with every day. As a preexisting health condition, I've had trouble with insurance coverage and have had to take care of medical costs out of pocket. Preexisting condition health insurance is something that I have dreamed of, and something that might have made me seek relief a lot sooner, than waiting until I couldn't take the pain anymore in the interest of keeping the pain out of my bank account.

I can understand an insurance company not wanting to take on a problem that didn't occur on their watch, but the fact of the matter is, we live lives, things happen, and with current economic conditions and the realities of unemployment, we are likely to be switching jobs more frequently than those in previous generations. Preexisting medical conditions are a reality, and if they are interfering with our ability to work and function, preexisting condition health insurance is a desirable and worthy service.

And let's face it, with the way insurance rates have been hiked over the past decade, including the copays, insurance should cover preexisting conditions. Money paid for policies is used for investments, designed to bring more money to the insurance company's investors. While they should be expected to profit and thereby stay in business, the policy holders should be their first consideration. The fact that insurance companies haven't been as cooperative has been something that has led us closer and closer to socialized medicine. I'd rather have open options, and insurance companies that cover preexisting medical conditions have my vote over something that hasn't worked in so many other countries.

Preexisting condition health insurance is something we are going to need, and the insurance companies that provide it are the ones that should have our support.
