Prague An Architectural Paradise

In 1918 Prague became the capital of the Czechoslavak Republic after the end of World War I, and it wasn t until 1993 that Prague became the capital of the independent Czech Republic. With its winding streets and architecture in every possible style, there is something different to see around every corner.

Prague is a city rich with architectural style spanning the ages and has painstakingly restored many of the architectural wonders found in the city. The architecture found in Prague ranges from Romanesque, Gothic, Art Nouveau, Cubism, and more. With all the styles of architecture in the city it s almost like literally walking through history!

One of three rotundas still surviving, St. Martin Rotunda is not only the oldest rotunda but also the oldest building in the city dating back to the 11th century. Open only during services it is a fantastic example of Romanesque architecture, but the best example is The Basilica of St. George.

To experience Gothic architecture in Prague start with the Charles Bridge originally named the Stone Bridge, the bridge is rich with history and is one of the most recognizable sights in Prague. Not to be outdone the St. Vitus is one of the grandest and finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe and a fine legacy for Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV.

The Troja Chateau is a romantic retreat with gardens and a vineyard and is a Baroque style building that marks the transition from Early Baroque to High Roman Baroque. For an magnificent example of High Baroque architecture look to the St. Nicolas Cathedral the church has looked over the Lesser Town Square for centuries with its massive green dome.

Steeped with ancient architecture Prague also has also incorporated many other styles of architecture in many and unique ways. Prague even boasts having the worlds only Cubism lamp post, surrounded by several distinctly different types of architecture it is a poignant reminder of the wonderful history that surrounds the city. Sadly the construction of this building destroyed part of the old Jewish cemetery and was initially hated by locals, but with the addition of the unusual art on the tower it has become a truly unique building to visit. For a more whimsical look in the city and a post 1989 building the Dancing House is a declaration of modern style with its curving structure that almost looks like the house is moving.
