Introduction To The Problem

Whilst trying to grow African American hair long, breakage can be a huge issue. In this black haircare advice article, I'm going to explain how you can start to reduce the amount of breakage that occurs naturally, by understanding what factors contribute to it getting worse. You can go on to have beautiful long hair by following some of these simple steps.

Many people have tried and failed to grow their African American hair due to the drying out and fragility that occurs when the hair begins to get beyond a few inches long. It can often feel like you're in a never-ending circle of growth-breakage that's impossible to get out of once the brittle stage sets in. Unfortunately, this is a problem you will probably face whilst trying to grow your own hair longer, and if you don't - count yourself as one of the very, very few lucky ones out there.

Why African American hair is prone to breakage - and what isn't helping!

To help you understand how to grow African American hair long, you need to understand the causes that exacerbate the natural levels of breakage in our hair. Our main problem is due to the fact that darker hair tends to have less elasticity than lighter shades of hair. Black people have the driest scalps and we have the least amount of moisture held in our hair strands, to cope with everyday wear and tear. Coloring and constant blow-drying (or other sources of unnecessary heat, such as using straighteners) will all work towards weakening the hair.

In my own case, I had a lot of problems with breakage due to my hectic lifestyle. I was getting up first thing in the morning and showering before work, then blow drying my hair so I was ready to go out. This caused the hair to weaken much more than it would have had I simply allowed the hair to dry naturally.

Thankfully, as I became more frustrated about failing to grown my African American hair long, and started to look for products or advice to help, I realised my error and made some simple fixes. For example, the biggest change came from altering my normal routine. I now shower after work in the evening and allow my hair to dry naturally. I also make sure that I nourish my hair with a homemade oil serum at least once a month - it's a great excuse to do a bit of face or nail pampering whilst I wait twenty minutes for it to soak in.

Now it's up to you...

All of these small steps add up to a noticeable difference in the amount of breakage in my hair. Far too many women think that it's next to impossible to grow African American hair long without an expensive stylist - and I'm here to tell you that it just isn't true. Follow these tips, take care of your hair well, and you will start to see the difference for yourself in no time at all!
