Powerful Herbal Remedies

By:

Herbal remedies used to be the stuff of folklore, but research has proven that they can be very effective in treating many health problems. The main benefit of herbal medicines is that they are less expensive than conventional medicines and have fewer side effects. However, the results can vary according to patients, and this leads some to believe that herbs are completely ineffective. So are herbs a viable alternative to pharmaceuticals for you? We'll look at some common herbs that you can use to treat everyday illnesses.

Millions of people suffer from depression yet few receive proper treatment. There are many herbal remedies that are used for depression, but if you are currently taking medication for depression, do not stop without consulting your doctor. The herb St. John's wort has long been used in folk medicine for sadness, worry, nervousness and poor sleep. Medical research and clinical trials suggest that St. John's wort works better than a placebo and is as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression and has fewer side effects. St. John's wort may cause dizziness, dry mouth, indigestion, fatigue, and increases photo sensitivity. It can also interfere with the effectiveness of prescription and over-the-counter drugs such as antidepressants, drugs to treat HIV and AIDs, and oral contraceptives.

A lot of attention is being given to the benefits of Omega-3 fatty acids for normal brain function. Studies show that a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids may help lower triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). Omega-3 fatty acids may also act as an anticoagulant to prevent blood from clotting. Several other studies also suggest that these fatty acids may help lower high blood pressure. In countries with higher fish consumption, such as Japan and Taiwan, the depression rate is 10 times lower than in North American. However, fish oil capsules may interact with blood-thinning drugs, and cause indigestion.

Most people would not consider herbal remedies for treating acne. Some herbs like calendula, German chamomile, witch hazel, licorice root, flaxseed and tea tree oil have anti-inflammatory properties and may be helpful in the treatment of acne. The herbs work by reducing the amount of the P.acnes bacteria produced by the body as a reaction to clogged pores. Tea tree oil has been favorably compared to benzoyl peroxide in the reduction of P.acnes and is said to have fewer side effects like stinging, itchiness and dry skin.

If you are a devout believer in herbal remedies, then you can grow your own herbs as home. These fresh from the garden herbs can be used as seasonings in food or made into herbal teas. You can also use the herbs in creams, essential oils and compresses. You'll love how the tingle of dried mint leaves in your bath will make you feel. Herbals can boost your overall health, but discuss your herbal remedy treatment options with your doctor before trying something out. Some herbs can interact negatively with medication, or have a negative impact with their effectiveness. If you use them properly, herbs can improve your life.
