Before a tummy tuck, there are limitations to which swimsuits will look good and afterward, there will be a few, too. A tummy tuck is another name for the cosmetic surgical procedure formally called an abdominoplasty. An abdominoplasty is an operation performed by a board certified plastic surgeon in a hospital in order to tighten up the belly region.

Before surgery, a man's or woman's midsection may be stretched out and saggy. This may be as a result of aging, pregnancy in the case of the female, or rapid weight loss. Any of these styles will look smashing and show off the flattened abs without any possibility of revealing scars. An extremely skimpy bikini, thong or string suit may be too revealing to hide scars.

During an abdominoplasty, a patient will have his or her excess abdominal skin removed and tightened up and stitched at the pubic hair line. The navel has to be relocated in some cases, in order to remain natural looking. The inner corset of connective fascia must be tightened up during the procedure, as well, so that it will tautly contain the internal organs. This is an inpatient surgery which will require an overnight stay, anesthesia, drains placed in order to reduce swelling and the wearing of a compression garment.
