Post Operative Care In Tumescent Liposuction

By:

Tumescent liposuction is a technique that can be used for the removal of excess fats from the body. Over the last few years, this technique has become very popular for losing weight. The main benefit of using the tumescent liposuction technique is that it does not result in excessive bleeding that was a major problem with all other methods of liposuction, especially the ones developed before tumescent liposuction was invented. The tumescent liposuction process is carried out by injecting into the patient's body parts, a fluid consisting of lidocaine and epinephrine. Epinephrine constricts the blood vessels and thus prevents excessive blood loss. Once the surgery has been done, it is necessary that the patient takes care so that no complications arise after the surgery.

All liposuction procedures require the closure of incisions using sutures and the use of compression garments for at least two weeks. Also most liposuction procedures result in bruising, swelling and scarring on the skin. Liposuction procedures also injure the lymphatic capillaries and in many cases blood gets accumulated under the skin. All these problems make the recovery process a time consuming one. These are the reasons why post operative care in any liposuction technique is required.

There are several ways in which post operative care can be taken by the patient. Generally the time taken for recovery after the tumescent liposuction surgery is less and by using the post operative care methods, the recovery process can be quickened. The most commonly used method for post operative care is open drainage and bimodal compression. This is a new method of post operative care and is considered to be far more superior to the older recovery methods used. This method provides more comfort to the patient and reduces the recovery time by a significant margin.

Open drainage and bimodal compression is a modern post operative care method that reduces the pain, swelling and bruising that a patient suffers during tumescent liposuction surgery. This reduces the time taken by a patient to fully recover from the surgery. The blood that gets accumulated under the skin during tumescent liposuction which is also drained out using the open drainage method and this not only decreases the swelling but also speeds up the recovery process.

Compression garments are used after the surgery to compress the blood vessels so that excessive blood loss does not take place. Also these were worn to decrease the swelling that was caused due to the accumulation of blood under the skin surface. In case of tumescent liposuction, this is not necessary because blood loss hardly takes place. In tumescent liposuction open drainage is used to drain out blood by not closing the incisions with sutures and using special pads to drain out the blood that gets accumulated. Bimodal compression makes use of special elastic compression garments that optimizes the open drainage process. Tumescent liposuction makes use of small adits or holes on the skin to facilitate open drainage.

Post operative care is also necessary so that a patient does not need to make a lot of post operative visits to the surgeon.
