Porcelain Veneers - General Cosmetic Dentistry Information On Veneers

By: Daniel Beasley

Not everyone grows up with a perfectly beautiful smile. Genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors can do a number on a persons teeth. However, people who have crooked teeth, chipped teeth, or misaligned teeth do not have to maintain such an unpleasant appearance. There are many cosmetic dentistry procedures that can take an unattractive smile and turn it into something great.

One of the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures is the application of veneers. Although there are two types of veneers, composite resin and porcelain, the composite resin is not as high quality or as long-lasting as those made of porcelain. Veneers are custom-made shells that are installed over the top of the existing tooth. They are made to look and feel like a real tooth. Because of this, people will not likely know that you have veneers, unless the cosmetic dentistry procedure presents a drastic difference from your previous look. However, people you are meeting for the first time will only see a beautiful smile.

You should consider veneers if you have serious teeth issues like a severe crack, a large chip, or a sizable space that cannot be otherwise corrected. For more minor issues, bonding may be a better procedure for you. However, many people let a problem go too long and it can no longer be addressed with a simple procedure. What started out as a slight crack can grow into something major if it is ignored and porcelain veneers may be the only option.

Many well-known celebrities have porcelain veneers. Singer and actress Hilary Duff had quite a transformation when she got her porcelain veneers. Comedian Rosie ODonnell proudly reveals that the first big purchase she made after winning Star Search in the 1980s was to have veneers put in. She has since had them replaced with a newer version and has remarked it was the best thing she ever spent money on.

Porcelain veneers can be somewhat fragile, so if you get them, you will have to take good care of them. You may have to limit the crunchy foods you bite down on with your front teeth, like apples, and have to be especially careful not to grind your teeth. If you do grind while you sleep, you might need to get an appliance from your dentist to protect your veneers.
