Pope John Paul Ii

Pope John Paul Ii

The Roman Catholic Church has accepted the claim of a French Nun that Pope John Paul II interceded on her behalf upon his arrival in heaven and cured her of Parkinsons disease. Documented miracles after death are one of the requirements of canonization.

The Process of Becoming a Saint

The path to sainthood begins with an investigation approved by the local bishop. Under normal circumstances 5 years must pass from the death of the individual before the investigation commences. The pope has the authority to waive the waiting period.

Next a declaration of non cultus is made. This involves exhuming the body of the deceased and an examination is made to make sure that no cult activity or heretical worship has occurred, and relics are taken by the church.

With sufficient information the church declares the individual Venerable and while no churches or other monuments are built in the persons honor, prayer cards or other materials can be printed and used as a tool for requesting intercession.

Step four involved beatification. To become Blessed, further investigations take place to validate claims of miracles that the individual performed during life. Alternatively, an individual who dies as a martyr to their religion can be beatified by Papal decree.

Finally sainthood is achieved if a miracle can be attributed to the deceased. A saint day is assigned and celebrations may or may not take place on said day.

May 1, 2011 Just One More Step

The Church has declared its intention to beatify Pope John Paul on May 1, 2011 based upon the life he lived. This brings him one step closer to canonization. Unfortunately for those who are in favor of granting the former Pope sainthood, it appears that the nun in question has relapsed, bringing into question her recovery.

Not to worry, though, another miracle has been attributed to the late Pope. A man who was shot in the head in April, 2009, claims to have been saved by the intercession of the Pope; his local priest used a rosary blessed by the Pontiff to pray over the injured man. The attending doctors call his recovery nothing short of miraculous.
