Pool Playing With Pride

Pool Playing With Pride

By:

I have never been really great at playing any one particular sport, but I always tried my best. I still enjoy watching a good game no matter what the sport is. While playing football in my younger years, I sustained a bad knee injury. After recovering from that, I tried my hand at playing baseball. Hitting the ball was not a problem for me. In fact, I was really good at the game until my knee started acting up. Even though I had to face the fact that injuries come along with some sports, I still missed playing in one that I could truly enjoy. Now, I sometimes coach the little league guys on Saturday afternoon's. It's a lot of fun training and watching them. Even if they lose, they still have a good time. However this was not enough satisfaction, I needed to play something for myself.

A friend of mine, came to visit me for a month from Boston. When he arrived, I noticed with the luggage he brought, he was carrying a long case. I asked him what it was and he laughed at me. When he told me it was a pool stick, I laughed back. He was surprised to find out that I have never seen anyone carry one. He told me that within the group of friend's he hangs out with, if you didn't bring your own stick, you couldn't play the game. These guys were serious about their sport, so it further struck my interest in billiards. I decided to talk to my buddy a little more about the game of pool, and learn what I could from him.

This new information from my friend stirred up a lot of interest in the game for me. The next day he asked me where the nearest pool hall was. I didn't have an answer for him, but I myself wanted to go along with him. I asked one of my neighbor's if they knew of any, and they told me of one that was nearby. I decided to go with him, just to watch at first. When we arrived at the hall, I couldn't believe how many people liked to play the sport. It was so crowded, we had to wait for an empty table. I really liked the atmosphere of the place as well.

When it was my friend's turn for the next table, I watched every move he made from the time he put his stick together, to the people he challenged, to the time he won each game. He was great! I couldn't understand how he did it. He said the next game was mine and I honestly did not know what to do. I let him know I never played before and that he would have to teach me. So after playing for three more hours, I decided this was the sport for me. Most of the time he spent visiting me, was spent teaching me the game. I was proud that I had someone as good as him for a teacher.

I never thought I would be able to enjoy a sport that didn't involve too much hard physical movement, but I was wrong and playing the game of billiards and pool did not affect my knee at all. I got very involved in the game after my friend went home. There is something about it that will give you a great sense of pride. It really is a thinking mans game! I practiced every chance that I had and I was getting very good at it. Six month's later, I had plans to visit my friend in Boston. When he came to meet me at the train station, he was happy to see that I was carrying my own stick. I couldn't wait to show him how much I learned. Since that time years ago I have grown to be an exceptional player and with him we toured the amateur leagues dominating the competition. Now I can say with pride that I found a sport that I was truly good at!
