Of all the parameters of pond water, pH is the most important of all. It is the one that needs to be regularly monitored and fixed if deemed necessary. The pH of the pond water naturally fluctuates because of the many factors around it. In the morning, you may find the readings at their lowest and in the evening at their highest. Keep in mind that the ponds pH fluctuation should not change more than a single digit.

There are various pH test kits and pond pH buffer available to address the water balance problem. These test kits are necessary so that you will be able to monitor the regular fluctuation of the pond waters pH. For you to be able to easily read the test results that are more accurate be sure to use drop test kits. To make sure that the pond water has the right pH level, assure that it is regularly tested about once every week. In some cases like fish acting bizarrely or some of them died, pH tests should be conducted. Newly-built ponds require pH tests done more often than old ones therefore for new pond owners, monitor your ponds pH as often as you can because the fluctuation in new ponds happens more frequently.

The pH fluctuation in the pond can either be too high or too low. pH 7 is neutral and thus not too acidic and not to basic. The higher the pH is, the more alkaline there is in the pond water. If there is too much alkaline in the water, it can cause the fishs skin to abnormally peel. This is due to the chalkiness caused by too much alkaline present in the water where the fish swim.

High pH can also cause ammonia in the pond water to be more toxic. If the pH is neutral to low, .5 ppm of ammonia may not pose any threat to the lives of the fish and other marine life in the pond. But if the pH is higher than 7, ammonia can kill instantly kill the fish. That is why regular testing is needed.

There is a variety of reasons why the pond waters pH goes up. One of which is the cement used in building the pond. That is why often tests are required most especially for newly-built water gardens. Cement or builders lime contains high pH levels which can last from a couple of months to one year. Something that no one should ignore.

If you think that existing ponds are safe from having high pH levels caused by cement, think again. Waterfalls and fountains are usually built with cement where there is moving water. The water flowing between rocks onto cement allows cement particles to release high pH levels.

In order to solve high pH dilemma in the pond, all you have to do is to bring it up a bit with the use of vinegar. You may also use pH up product. Remember that low pH means more acid thus the vinegar. Be careful not to shock the fish by suddenly bringing the pH levels lower. You can pour the vinegar with at least half an hour of intervals. After putting the vinegar, test the pH once again and make sure that it doesnt reach pH6 or lower.
