Politics Overcomes Sports

By:

The Indian subcontinent is ravaged by politics. The latest victim is Cricket.

The misunderstanding arose after the 26/11, when the Pak Govt banned Paki players from playing on Indian soil.

At that time IPL II was on. It was only natural that the franchisees, knowing that Pak players will not get visas, excluded the talented Pakis.

When IPL III started, the same problem continued. The franchisees do not want to take the risk and hence there were no bids for the 11 Paki players. This is discrimination says Pak.

IPL is a private body and has nothing to do with the Govt.

Pakistan retorted angrily, saying that Paki players were banned by IPL. Paki players say that they will not take part in future IPL matches.

The Paki Govt intervened. Pak Home Minister Rehman Malik opined that India is not interested in normalising relations with Pak and that is why Pak players were not invited for IPL III. The Indian Govt, he feels, should interfere in this issue. In order to take revenge, Pak should boycott the coming Hockey World Cup. Pak will not send the Parliamentary gang to India, as a reciprocal gesture. It was in Australia that the Pak took the decision not to play in IPL, till India-Pak relations became normal.

Indian Sports Minister, M S Gill and External Affairs Minister S M Krishna say that the IPL is a private body. Also an economic body and the Govt cannot intervene in this issue. This info was conveyed to the Pak Sports Minister, Jakhrani, they say.

The political parties in Pak say that this is a deliberate humiliation of Pak cricket. All Pak visits will be banned. Rehman Malik opined that India should respect the talented cricketers of Pak, if India is interested in the peace process.

Zaheer Abbas say that Pak should boycott the World Hockey Cup and his opinion is echoed by millions of others in Pak.

The Chairman of the Pak Board, Ijaz Butt says this is a deliberate attempt to humiliate Pakistan. The new events are utterly unsatisfactory. Even though IPL is a private League, this action on the part of the franchisees is unjust.

Navjot Singh Sidhu says the Pak players should have been included. Rameez Raja feels that the Indian Board must use more discretion.

The 11 players in IPL auction are Afridi,Gul,Imran,Nazir,Rana Naved,Mohd Amir,Abdul Razzak,Kamran Akmal,Umar Akmal,Sayeed Anwar,Sohail Tanvir

We feel that Indian Board must intervene and invite the Pak players. It is not too late now ! It is time we divorced Politics from Sports !
