Political Thoughts, Fair Trade Coffee, And The World

By:

I got up this morning and made myself my morning brew. Dark roast Ethiopian fair trade coffee beans were used for my morning eye opener. Wonderful! As usual my first thought of the day were about the world around us and how this planet lives their lives. An exciting topic for the thoughts of any morning, this is the start of my day.

In those thoughts, as I sipped the first hot taste of my morning cup of coffee I thought about the fairness of the world. I think about justice and the levels of equity that exist. The image of down trodden people and the unfair trade practices appeared in my mind. As usual, quite a cheery image for starting the day with. These are my usual thoughts for the beginning of my day, how we treat our fellow human beings. I think of the injustices in the world. I think about the political ramifications of powerful nations and more so powerful corporations that think only of power and the massing of great wealth over the daily existence of the earthly population who carries the daily loads of laboring existence. These are the people who struggle to feed their families, find meager shelter, clothing, and education for a better future. A future that in many cases is difficult to make any better.

This all goes back to my first sip of my morning fair trade coffee. It"s impossible to change the world, at least quickly or on a large scale. I know that. However, I do believe that we each can do our small part of supporting the people and the communities around this planet. After all we are all one people. That fact is we are all people from the planet Earth. We may reside in different countries or states, have unique cultures. We all have differing faith belief systems or political ideals. That is simple and true. Most of us on this planet seek the same thing, a simple meager survival. We look for a way to keep moving from one day to the next and to make the lives of our families a little bit easier and better than the day before. We all seek to make a better future for our families and community.

Buying Fair Trade Coffee does a tiny step of that "building a better future" scenario. With each sip we take of our deliberately purchased Fair Trade Coffee we take that step towards a better future. This step is not only for our own moral compass but also for the earth as a whole. This is one small step. However it is a step in the right direction.

This is what I think of while I get ready for my day. This is what I ponder as my day builds into its fully challenging directions. What do you ponder? Do you consider the life of the person that tends the coffee trees or who picks the coffee berries? Do you consider how they survive? Do you consider how their lives reflect on yours? This is the first step of building empathy for our fellow people. Their lives are really not that much different than ours when you look at the struggle for daily survival. Realizing the plight of the people in the commercial coffee supply chain allows you to consider the position of people around the world. A small change in purchasing habits on your part can increase their value to their community. Changing your purchasing habits will increase the value of your community. We increase the opportunity for the coffee grows which in turn makes a better life for their families and community. This is a win "" win for us as coffee drinkers as well as for the Fair Trade Coffee supply chain. It is a small step but an important one for us to take. One small step for each of us builds into one large step for the people of our planet.
