Policy Hurdles Invite Wrath Of Jamnagar Brass Units

By:

SME brass traders and manufacturers in Jamnagar are up in arms over the recent notification issued by the Union Environment Ministry, which requires importers of brass scrap to register.

Industry players believe that bureaucratic hurdles and lack of adequate government aid are restricting the growth of the brass industry in the region. To help the sector grow, small-scale units and industry associations have sought policy support and called for relaxation of stringent norms.

Call for easing of development policies

Given that the bulk of the metal as required by small-scale traders and manufacturing units in Jamnagar are being imported from the Western markets, the Union Environment Ministrys announcement of making registration mandatory for importers of brass scrap has come as a setback.

The Ministrys main objective behind issuing such a notification is that such a move will put an end to duty-stealing. However, we have taken up the matter with Jairam Ramesh, minister of environment and forests, as such a measure will hinder the smooth flow of imports, thereby limiting the growth prospects of the sector, said Ramjibhai Patel, president of Jamnagar Factory Owners Association (JFOA).

According to the industry estimates, nearly 70% of the 100,000-150,000 tonnes of brass as consumed per annum in India is imported from the Western markets such as Europe and the US.

Import of brass is necessary for SME brass traders to sustain and continue catering to the domestic requirement. Therefore, the government should consider the request made by the industry representatives, said B Kumar, proprietor of Gujarat Castings, a small-sized brass importer in Jamnagar.

JFOA and SME brass industrial units have further sought easing of state and Central policies and change in banking policies to ensure higher growth of the brass sector in the region.
