Planting Trees At Your Home And How To Do It Properly

By:

You have decided that you wish to have a tree or three outside your home and your determined that you have enough room to put at least one in, but have no idea exactly how to go about it properly. Planting trees can seem like a somewhat daunting task, given their size and the fact they will get much larger in the future. You need to determine when to plant your trees, the location of your tree planting site, dig a proper sized hole, and position it.

The first thing to decide is where to plant your trees. If you are planting trees for a windbreak, then you will want them along the property where there is the most wind. If you want some shade then plant your trees in those areas you want shade. Location is very important when planting trees. Another factor in where you decide to put your trees down at is the type of tree you are planting.

Some trees have root systems that tend to go straight down or dont stray too much from the base of the tree where it grows out of the ground. Some root systems can branch out enough to damage the foundation of your house if they are planted too close. Other root systems will dive for underground water sources, such as the water pipes coming into your house. Make sure that the trees you pick are placed in accordance to what their root systems will do as the trees grow and you will avoid these problems.

Once you have picked your trees and the places you will put them, you need to decide what time of year to put them in. Trees are more likely to grow well and survive if they are planted initially when they are not being exposed to extreme temperatures. Plant them early in the fall after the last summer heat waves, or early in spring once the ground has thawed sufficiently for digging. Now you need to dig a hole. When you are planting trees determine the size of the roots and dig your holes two or three times bigger around than this. To figure out how deep the hole needs to be measure from the top of the root system to the bottom of the roots or pot and dig your hole this deep.

Finally, you need to position your tree. Ensure that the side of the tree with the most foliage is in the way of where the wind usually blows. This will let the less full side have time to grow in and match the other side. If your tree is not sitting level in the ground, then add more dirt underneath the roots before filling in the hole to level it out. Planting trees may take a little hard work and a little time, but it is not difficult and if you do it right the first time you will have a great tree in only a few years.
