Planting Roses Made Easy

By:

Roses can be planted in the open ground at any time from Autumn to Spring, but from past experience I have found that Late Autumn is probably the most favourable time. Nowadays most gardeners grow some roses in old food cans or large treated paper pots and from these they can be transplanted at any time, even in mid-summer, provided moist soil is kept around the roots.

Roses are not difficult to plant and they will probably survive rough treatment better than most plants, but a little care and understanding will help to give them a good start. There are three things to avoid as each of them may affect the plants severely. They are: allowing the roots to become very dry before or during the time of planting; planting too deeply, and doubling up some of the roots so that their ends are pointing upwards instead of outwards or downwards as they should.

The planting holes should be of ample size, a bit too big rather than a little too small. A hole 10 to 12 inches deep and about 15 inches in diameter is usually about right for a well grown bush rose. Look carefully at each bush before it is planted and, if some of the root ends are broken or damaged, cut them back a little with sharp secateurs. Then hold the bush in the middle of the hole with one hand and with the other spread the roots as evenly as possible. None should curl upwards. If they do it may be necessary to make the hole a little deeper.

The bush should be held so that the point where the branches join the main root is just below the natural soil level, about half an inch. Then return the soil a little at a time, working it around and between the roots. Whenever possible try to have an assistant to help, one pair of hands to hold the bush and work in the soil, and another pair to yield a spade to throw in the soil. When nearly all the soil has been returned, tread it down firmly. Firming with the hands is not sufficient with roses. Finally the remaining soil can be scattered over the surface to obliterate foot marks and leave a clean, level surface.
