Plantar Fasciitis And How To Treat Your Heel Pain

By:

Confused with bone spurs, planters fasciitis, more correctly spelled plantar fasciitis, actually refers to the syndrome of the inflammation of the band of tissue, known as fascia, that runs from the heel along the arch of the foot. Anyone that has ever experienced this condition has never forgotten it.

Typically, men and women of middle age become affected by this condition. The symptom most associated with this syndrome is a localized pain, like a "stone" bruise, over the heel area of the foot. This condition can often be associated with rapid weight gain and can sometimes be found in recreational athletes due to repetitive actions in certain sports that cause damage to fibrous tissue that forms in the arch of the foot.

What are the most common symptoms of the plantar fasciitis syndrome?

*A pain that develops gradually over time

*Pain and tenderness at the bottom of the heel.

*The swelling of the heel

*Pain that is worse in the morning and progresses to a dull ache by the end of the day.

*Difficulty in bending your toes inward to your shin.

Causes for this syndrome are not really know, but it may be that there are certain factors that may affect how the feet work and this may lead to plantar fasciitis. These activities may include:

*Repetitive activities like employment that requires you to walk or stand on irregular or hard surfaces for a prolonged amount of time

*Aging

*Injuries to the foot

*Biomechanical factors like abnormal rolling of the foot, flat feet, high arches, tight calf muscles or tight tendons at the back of the heel

*abnormal, inward twisting of the foot

Although treatment of plantar fasciitis generally requires a long-term approach, some of the things you shoud do:

*Modify your workout to reduce stress on the plantar fascia

*Rest and ice your foot during early stages of treatment

*Finding alternative exercises to walking or running, perhaps swimming or biking

*Over The Counter anti-inflammatories to help reduce the swelling, check with your doctor

Other treatment for plantar fasciitis:

*Putting shoe inserts (orthotics) to help cusion the heel of the shoe

*wearing a nigh splint designed for this syndrome

*wearing specially designed socks

*a plantar fascia massage

Using these tips and exercises routinely, you will find that you should be able to manage your plantar fasciitis in a relatively short amount of time. If you are experiencing more than normal pain with your heel, then you should consult your physician.
