Plant Protein Sources -- Spirulina

Plant Protein Sources -- Spirulina

By:

In the past, plant protein powder formulas haven't been the greatest. They were filled with lots of fiber and incomplete proteins. But these days, with Spirulina and other plant sources being shown as richer protein sources than even their animal protein counterparts, plant protein powders are getting another look in the microscope. Not only that, but because of the fact that the vegetarian and vegan movements have grown so large, there is a much higher demand for rich protein powder sources that are plant based. Though the 90s and 00s were all about whey protein, the years to come should see a huge uprising of other kinds of proteins.

Plant proteins have historically had one huge problem, the fact that they haven't historically been complete proteins. What do I mean when I say an incomplete protein? Essentially, to be considered as complete, a protein needs to have all of the amino acids that are used by the body. All in all, there are 22 amino acids used by the body, and most animal sources of protein contain all 22. Out of the 22, 8 of those amino acids are labeled essential amino acids, due to the fact that the body can't make them but needs to get them from food. The other 14 the body can synthesize on its own. So obviously these 8 are of special consequence. This is the main reason why plant proteins have had a rough start, because a lot of them are not complete protein sources. They don't contain all of the different amino acids used by the body for daily function. This is why a large push has happened in recent years toward finding more rich and complete sources of plant protein. There are several popular brands these days that have come out with plant protein powder formulas loaded with complete proteins.

One such powder is Spirulina, though Spirulina powder isn't usually directly marketed as a protein powder. Spirulina algae is not only a complete protein, in fact, it has been shown to have more protein than any meat source out there. That's pretty incredible. Since this discovery, Spirulina algae has seen an explosion in production and availability. Though a stigma still exists for the time being against many plant protein powders, acceptance is growing because of all of the other amazing nutritional value they often offer.. Not only does Spirulina algae have huge amounts of protein, it also contains over 100 other nutrients, including trace vitamins and minerals and a bunch of other compounds that are very rare in the modern diet. This gives Spirulina huge value in modern society. Not only is this a very rich source for protein, making it valuable for vegans and vegetarians, it's also nutrient dense, making it valuable for anyone. This isn't something you can get from animal protein powder sources. For these reasons and more is why I believe that plant protein powder formulas are going to see a huge gain in popularity and availability in future years. Though they probably won't ever appeal to weightlifters and bodybuilders, they'll appeal to the rest of us who want quality protein sources without the fats and grease that often accompany protein dense foods.
