Planning A Winter Picnic

By:

Just because it's winter, doesn't mean you can't enjoy a picnic. Unless you're in the midst of a blizzard, a winter picnic is always a fun-filled option for winter recreation. And although snow on the ground may mean you'll need picnic tables and chairs, it also means you'll have plenty of fun options for picnic activities. Here are a few tips on how to plan the perfect winter picnic.

Finding the right picnic blanket

In the summer, it's possible to lounge in the grass without a picnic blanket, but colder weather makes the ground really frigid. When selecting a picnic blanket, make sure it's thick, waterproof and easily transportable. Lastly, make sure it's big enough. There's nothing worse than cramming onto a tiny blanket in the cold.

Dress Warm

This sounds like a no-brainer, but if you don't dress warm, a winter picnic could easily turn sour. Gloves, coats, blankets and winter hats will ensure that you're warm so you can focus your energy on relaxing and enjoying great food. If your hands get cold, consider purchasing a pair of hand warmers to fight off the frigid temperatures.

Winter Picnic Food

For the most enjoyable winter picnic, it's best to avoid standard summer picnic foods like cold sandwiches, iced drinks and parfaits. These types of foods will simply make you colder.

Instead, think warm. Taking along a camping stove or grill will not only give you some extra heat, but will also allow you to cook up satisfying grub, like a hot burger, warm marshmallows, S'mores, hot dogs or hot soup.

Warm Beverages

The right beverage will take your winter picnic from an average event to a fantastic experience. A cup of hot coffee or cocoa can warm up your hands and your insides on a cold day. Don't have anything to carry your picnic beverages in? A coffee backpack or coffee tote is an ideal way to conveniently carry your winter drinks. If you're looking for something a little more potent, consider bringing a flask of whiskey or making some mold wine.

Winter Picnic Activities

Snow on the ground means that you have a number of fun options for picnic entertainment. One great source of winter picnic fun is to pick teams and fire away at each other in a feisty snowball fight. Don't feel like hurling snow? Well, then consider making snow angels or building snowmen or snow forts.

In Conclusion

Just because it's winter, doesn't mean you can't enjoy a picnic. Unless you're in the midst of a blizzard, a winter picnic is always a fun-filled option for winter recreation. And although snow on the ground may mean you'll need picnic tables and chairs, it also means you'll have plenty of fun options for picnic activities.
