Planning A Kitchen Remodel: You Will Reget It If You Don't Follow This Advice

By:

For someone who loves to cook, even if it is just for a few friends over for dinner or holding large holiday gatherings, having a kitchen that allows them the freedom to explore their passion to the fullest makes everything easier. A kitchen remodel is the dream that many people have and it can be achieved in a number of ways.

A kitchen remodel can be as simple as adding new updated appliances, resurfacing cabinets, to completely renovating the space cabinets, counters. In some cases, it can be thinking outside the box in the sense that maybe a wall needs to come out so the kitchen can expand into the living.

The first step is making a budget. It is easy to go overboard in a hurry and end up with a kitchen that is half the national debt. So think about priorities and see where those take you. Once you have established an amount, start putting together the pieces that will make your kitchen more functional. Then see if you have money left over to add some extra special features.

A work island is a great feature for a basic upgrade. An island will provide you plenty of counter space for preparing food. If you have the room, make part of the island a breakfast bar with stools. This is a great place for quick meals or for guests to sit, watch and visit while you cook. As most cooks know, the kitchen becomes the center of activity during a party.

If you bake, you might consider a built in bread board and a cabinet that allows for vertical storage of cookie sheets, baking stones, and cooling racks. Large sliding drawers are great for baking pans. An overhead pot rack keeps frequently used pots and utensils within reach.

A pantry is another great feature. One that is not so deep that you can't see what is in back. Ideally, shelves that slide out keep canned goods from hiding and makes accessing the one you want easier.

Counter top materials are where you can spend a fortune. Basic materials include plastic laminate, Richlite (a wood like composite), ceramic tile, concrete and wood. The pricier versions are stone, metal, granite, marble, glass and more. The difference is durability.

Less expensive counter tops will scratch and/or stain. The more expensive types may not scratch, but if you crack or chip them they are costly to repair. The kind you choose depends on what you can afford and what kind of vision you are trying to achieve.

Another typical upgrade is improving the kitchen sink and faucet. A double sink that is the largest you can fit into the space is a good idea if you handle large pots. A faucet that either has a tall profile (for filling tall pots) or that has a pull-out spout is pretty handy.

Remodeling often strikes fear in many people. As soon as they mention this idea to friends and coworkers, they will have to tell you about the horror stories they heard from other friends and coworkers who endured the kitchen remodel process.

But with some planning and realistic expectations, the end result can outweigh all of the work involved in having it installed.
