Planetary ball mills are machines that are used to create a very high degree of fineness while grinding materials to be used in ceramics, paints, mineral dressing processes and pyrotechnics. These machines possess the energy input required for mechanical alloying procedures. They are also used for colloidal grinding, size reduction and classical mixing processes. These grinders are cylindrical in shape rotating around a horizontal axis. The cylinder is partially filled with the substance that requires being ground long with the grinding medium. Stainless steel balls, ceramic balls, or flint pebbles are used as media for the grinding.

Functioning of a planetary ball mill

A planetary ball mill is different from a common ball mill in more ways than one. These mills are usually used in laboratories in order to grind sample material into very small and fine particles. Planetary ball mills have a minimum of one grinding jar. There can be varieties that have more than one grinding jar as well. The grinding jar is placed in a way that it is not symmetrical to the center of a sun wheel. If the grinding jars move in a clock-wise direction the sun-wheel rotates in an anti-clock movement. The grinding balls within the grinding jars are subjected to the hypothetical Coriolis force - a kind of force that is operated on any object that travels from the pole of a rotational object. This is a kind of superimposed rotational movement that the grinding balls get subjected to. What happens here is that there is a great difference in speeds between the movement of the grinding jars and the balls. This difference creates a reciprocal action between the impact forces and the frictional forces. This in turn produces a very high degree of size reduction of the substance placed in the planetary ball mill.

Planetary ball mills are also known as vertical ball mills. They are not meant for industrial or commercial use but as we mentioned earlier, they are used in laboratories. These machines are as large as normal blenders and can be used for processing small quantities of materials. The rotational cylinders of the planetary ball mills are non-detachable. Once you pour the materials into the container the cap needs to be replaced and it seems to work more or less like a kitchen blender. There are variable speed settings that can be adjusted depending on the required fineness of the particles.
