Phones Systems Are Right For All Sized Businesses

By:

In today's struggling economy, business owners are seeking to reduce their costs in any way they can. One way to save a significant amount of money on phone costs is for businesses to purchase a PBX, also known as a Private Branch Exchange.

A PBX is a privately owned telephone switching system. It allows businesses to run several telephone lines from one location without having to pay a phone company for the use of each line. Put simply, a the phone system allows businesses to dramatically reduce the cost of communicating with the outside world.

You can imagine how expensive voice service can be for businesses needing hundreds of phones. A well adjusted and sized exchange setup, though, does all the work of a phone company's central office by routing calls through and outside the business.

With a PBX system up and running, each of a business phones only requires an extension, not a separate phone number. The internal switch then handles every call made from employees within the building.

When employees need to call outside the office, they first dial an access number. This is most often the number '9' and then the area code and phone number they are trying to reach. The software recognizes this, and transfers the call to the public phone company's central office. From here, the call is then treated like a normal voice relay.

A properly sized solution of this nature ends up reducing the cost that businesses pay for phone service, because companies only pay for those lines that will be connected at any time to the outside world. Those phones that are calling within the company will incur no charges.

You can see how quickly a PBX system can save companies money.

Quality systems can also give businesses more control over the numbers that their employees dial. Some, for instance, can prevent employees from dialing '900' numbers or to certain area codes.

A quality voice solution internally can also come with several features. These will have an up front sum charge, but convenience wins the day. Some switching systems come with voice mail, call forwarding, conferencing and other options.

Of course, private switching systems aren't free, but they do bring in significant savings on a yearly basis. Small phone solutions generally cost from $100 to $1,000 depending on the features that come with them. Larger systems can cost as much as $10,000.

If your business needs to reduce its operating expenses, consider a new phone switch. It might turn out to be one of the wisest investments you've made.
