Phnom Tamao Zoo Enjoy The Richness Of Cambodia

Cambodia is known for its densely covered forests, which support a rich and diverse ecosystem. The jungles of Cambodia are home to many exotic and exciting animals, and are terrific places to go on a safari. It is a terrific activity for adventure lovers and those who like the outdoors, and an excellent way of getting familiar with the country's wildlife. While camping is a good option for the outdoorsy, it is not an activity for everybody. For those who prefer the indoors, the Phnom Tamao Zoo, which was actually established to take care of wild animals rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, provides a suitable alternative.

Phnom Tamao Zoo is the largest zoo in Cambodia, spanning over 1200 hectares. It is located in Tro Pang Sap village in the Takeo Province, about 30 kilometres south east of Phnom Penh. Part zoo, part wildlife rescue centre, it is one of the most popular stops in the country, and sees many visitors annually. The zoo itself is only 80 hectares large, the rest being reserved for future development. The sanctuary was set up to conserve some of the endangered endemic wildlife. It is continuously under development, with constant improvements being made. The sanctuary houses many large animals including leopards, bears, elephants, tigers and even lions.

Despite the vast scale of the zoo, it is actually underfunded, and where most zoos prohibit the feeding of animals, visitors are encouraged to do so here. A number of locals operate food stalls around the zoo where visitors can purchase treats for the animals. The cages are minimal and one can even pet some of the animals. One can hire an English speaking tour guide, who will be more than happy to point out the animals which like to be petted. Remember to negotiate a price before the tour starts. The Killing Fields Memorial is located on the way to the zoo, and tourists visiting the Tamao Zoo can stop by here as well.

While Cambodia may not be the most developed country in Asia, it is still possible to find a luxury hotel Phnom Penh with all the comforts of the western world. The Raffles Hotel Le Royal, with its tantalising spa and chic restaurant, is more than ready to pamper and spoil its guests. The Phnom Penh hotel is located in the heart of the city and allows guests easy access to the city's best shops and tourist attractions.
