As one of the oldest and best known restaurants in Southern California, Philippes is a landmark of California cuisine and exists as a throwback to a better time. People come far and wide to try the legendary French dip sandwich, but the entire experience is one that you must definitely partake in if you find yourself in Los Angeles.

Philippe The Original is situated between Dodger Stadium and Union Station, so you can imagine the number of baseball fans who stopped by for a sandwich and a beer throughout the restaurants history. As you could probably guess, the restaurant is decorated with a baseball and train motif, and huge dining tables and enclosed booths offer great places to come with the family or enjoy a power lunch.

As far as the food in concerned, the menu is reminiscent of a classic delicatessen. Each day of the week, there is a choice between two tasty soups, or you can opt for a salad instead. Standard favorites, like a good old-fashioned tuna salad sandwich, are served on a variety of breads. For dessert, you can enjoy a variety of pies and other standard American dessert fare.

But the main attraction at Philippes is the amazing French dip sandwich. Your choice of beef, pork, ham, lamb, or turkey is served au jus inside of a perfectly-made French roll that is light and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Combined with classic American sides, this is a lunch that you will truly remember as the culinary highpoint of your visit to Los Angeles.

All in all, Philippes is an old-fashioned place, and its homey, comfortable ambiance makes it great fun to visit. The food, though, is something else, and you will go away wishing that Philippe would cook you lunch every day. The restaurant is located at 1001 N Alameda St. It's just one block north of Union Station and Olvera Street in downtown L.A.
