An ESL teacher will need to have a positive personality and lots of energy. Encouraging their students will help to make the learning process more fun. The teacher should also be flexible and therefore show eagerness in adapting to any lesson plans in a particular circumstance or class. They will need to also adapt to new methodologies, technology and learning environments. Classes can sometimes last a good few hours every day, and the ESL teacher will need a strong character coupled with skills in keeping the students wanting to learn every day.

The teacher should certainly give the students the opportunity for doing their best, regardless of their learning styles or individual personalities. An ESL teacher must be able to inspire, inform as well as entertain their students while they cover some pretty complex concepts. To succeed as a teacher in ESL will require them to possess a particular blend of qualities and skills that not everyone will have. Teaching ESL can be a very challenging job, but the personal rewards will be tremendous.
Speaking English will not be the only requirement in an ESL job.

It will be helpful to know all about the cultural and educational
background of the country you are teaching in. It is not a prerequisite to be able to speak another language, but it will always give a useful perspective of the developments and efforts of the student. However, there will always be a teacher from the school who will be in the classroom with you while you are teaching in case of any language barrier.

An ESL teacher should have the ability to gauge the mood of the classroom and offer the stimulus that the students will need before they start to lose any interest. The teacher should enjoy teaching. If a teacher is enjoying what he or she loves to do, the students will pick up on this and become more involved in the learning process. The ESL teacher should prepare lessons with a lot of fun activities with games, role-play and songs. This will make learning English a lot more enjoyable and fun, instead of a monotonous succession of boring exercises and drills.
