There are as many ways to make the perfect martini as there are people with opinions about it. A perfect martini is made the way you like it, which is all that matters, isnt it? And, as you are naturally possessed of exquisite taste, it therefore follows that your preferred method of martini construction would indeed, be perfect!

But as there are a zillion different types of martinis, theres also ten zillion ways to make them and we cant possibly cover them all here. So, as weve got the months ahead to perfect the technique, weve chosen to make Peppermint Martinis. This one was created by the gods themselves, especially for those December celebrations in which we all involve ourselves in one form or another.

Now we need to make just one peppermint martini for starters okay, well build two of them because your mother taught you to share everything! This will provide us with that necessary combination of delightful tastes and textures - and with dedication, perseverance, love and enthusiasm, well just about get it right for Christmas.

As were making vodka peppermint martinis, lets put the vodka in the freezer to make sure its good and cold. Put the other bottles in the fridge to chill thoroughly.

5 ounces Chopin or Stolichnaya vodka (get the good stuff - do not cheap out on this);
2 ounces of white crme de menthe, chilled;
ounce chilled peppermint schnapps.

Make sure your cocktail shaker is well chilled put it in the freezer; and while were at it, lets chill a couple of martini glasses too. Crack some ice cubes and half-fill the shaker with them and let it sit for a minute or two.

And while were waiting, a word about ice! Ice is frozen water and if were going to be perfectionists lets use good filtered water to make our ice. It plays a critical role in our martini creation as it becomes one with the precious ingredients during the shaking process. It gently incorporates and calms the flavors resulting in a martini which is mellow and delicious.

Next, we pour all the ingredients, one by one into the chilled shaker and shake it vigorously for about a minute. You might want to add some artistry to this critical process with some hula moves! Allow the shaker to rest for a minute or so and strain the luscious concoction into the martini glasses. Garnish with a candy cane and sip! Sip again! Good, huh? As you experiment and perfect your peppermint martini, try using pepper vodka instead of the regular one.

Fast forward to Christmas. Visualize your shimmering Christmas tree, with piles of gifts, scents of fresh pine boughs and wreaths, a long dining table, groaning with a holiday feast fit for several kings, kids and grandkids running around and indescribably wonderful smells coming from the kitchen. The time is exactly right to start shaking up that batch of peppermint martinis over which youve sacrificed yourself all year during your quest for perfection.

These peppermint martinis will titillate your appetite for the feast to come, turn your mother-in-law into one of the nicest people youve ever met (especially if she sips on a couple of these babies too) and will muffle the sound of excited, shouting children.

Double or triple the quantities if there are a number of adults present who are seeking the same effects. Here are some measures if youre planning to make a whole bunch of peppermint martinis,

-one ounce is equal to two tablespoons
-one shot equals 1 ounces;
-one cup is eight ounces.

You can dress up your tray of martinis just before you serve them with colorful straws (cut them to fit the glasses) poinsettia sprays, a scattering of fresh cranberries, small candy canes and Christmas sparklers you choose!
