Pepper Spray Products-how They Work

Self defense products like pepper sprays and stun guns have been used by law enforcement agencies and even military units for decades. Within the last 10 years or so they become immensely popular in the civilian unity. Part of the reason for that of course is the tremendous track record they have with law enforcement. There is no police officer in the country today that doesn't carry a pepper spray on his utility belt.

Even postal carriers carry pepper sprays as a good defense against dog attacks.

Most people don't know that the origins of pepper spray go back thousands of years to when the Chinese threw bags of hot spices at their enemies. I guess you can still do that but it's much easier to buy a $10.00 pepper spray.

I remember back when I was young pup going through officer basic training and my first encounter with pepper spray. It was one of the most memorable days of my life-one I will never forget. Everyone going into the armed forces has to be subjected to pepper spray so they know how effective it is. The same holds true for all police officer candidates. Only when you experience it firsthand can you appreciate how effective it is.

So how does it work? Pepper spray uses a derivative of one of the hottest peppers in the world-the cayenne pepper. Oleoresin capsicum or OC for short is the main ingredient. A short spray in the face with OC swells the mucous membranes which makes breathing difficult. It also swells the veins in the eyes causing the eyes to close. It causes excessive tearing, choking and intense pain. But the effects only last for 45 minutes giving you time to get away from the bad guys.

When it comes to protecting yourself pepper spray products are the way to go.

If you think crime can only happen to the other guy you are wrong. The "other guy" is thinking the same thing and to him you are that "other guy". There is a reason why they call it self defense. You have to protect yourself, your family, your home and business!!
