People Shyness - Do Not Allow This Condition To Ruin Your Social Life

By:

People shy may be a term you have never taken heed of before.

Are you embarrassed by your own shyness toward other people? Do you feel uneasy when socializing or even speaking in public? If your reply is yes, then you are more than likely 'people shy'.

You don't have to feel ashamed about it. Millions all over the world are sharing your problem. However, there are some cases in which being people shy interferes with our lives. This becomes a problem when it affects you on a daily basis, so you need to know how to overcome it.

First of all, we must discuss what the real definition of being 'people shy' is. Shyness, which is also called "diffidence" by some, is described as the feeling of reluctance and even fearfulness when being exposed to people not known to you.

Shyness can also be described as lack of confidence and apprehension when you are approached by another person. For a person to become shy, a lot of factors are significant: genetic trait, personality introversion and most importantly, the environment in which the person grew up in. Now an example of this would be when a person grows up being the only child, or maybe in a small neighborhood, wherein he or she has little or no opportunity to mingle with peers or other people. What would you think that person would feel if he or she has been suddenly exposed to an overly crowded neighborhood and people would casually approach him or her?

You may think that you have no power to conquer people shyness, but you have all the power needed to overcome it. All you need to have is a lot of positive attitude and determination. In the long run, you will be surprised at how pleasant it is to mingle confidently with other people.

Start off by approaching groups of people in discussion, join the discussion but don't feel you necessarily must contribute immediately. Nod and smile, when appropriate and try to catch people's attention through good eye contact.

In psychology this technique is called desensitization, which means exposing yourself to what you fear most, just a little at any one time. Shyness is one condition that responds well to this approach.

Keep practicing this until you feel self-assured enough to actually contribute to the conversation. Before you know it you will begin to conquer being people shy!
